Motorcycle Photography Image Blending

Motorcycle Photography: this image is of a Triumph Thunderbird 900 originally photographed in a studio setting using light painting techniques. In a subsequent editing session, the background was replaced with this road and setting sun. Opacity and a second layer using lighting options was added to make the colours and tone of the bike blend in. Lastly a shadow/reflection was added.

Editing was carried out using Perfect Layers and Lightroom. Subtle colour tones were added to some of the highlights on the bike to compliment the warm backlighting.

Here’s an example of Motorcycle Photography made into poster artwork by using blended layers to form the final image. In this picture a total of three photographs were used to create this slightly surreal looking effect.

Motorcycle Photography: Light Painting a Thunderbird.

This photograph is the initial result from a ‘Light Painting’ motorcycle photography shoot using a Triumph Thunderbird.

The image has been saved ‘as is’ but could form the basis of another project to cut out and replace the background; maximising the potential opportunities offered by digital photography and modern post processing techniques.

Triumph Thunderbird Sport photo shoot

Here is a photograph of a Triumph Thunderbird Sport motorcycle taken in woodland. This bike photography shoot was set up using off camera flash and if you click and zoom in on the photograph you can see how the detail of the bike is picked out.

Motorcycle photography is no different than photographing any other subject and the same portrait techniques and principles apply. In this example the strobe flash lighting was positioned to light the bike and enhance the detail, whilst be careful to avoid direct reflections which would create ‘hot spots’ and blown out highlights.

Exposure is controlled by using the camera in Manual mode to select the correct aperture and shutter speed for the ambient lighting conditions.

The picture below shows just how the photo shoot was set up using wireless controlled flash:
